Derivation: Patronymic Meaning: Literally it means Son of Andrew or Anders. Countries of Origin: Scotland (Anderson), Sweden (Andersson, Anderson), Denmark & Norway(Andersen) Variations: Andison, Andersonne, Andirsoone, Andersoun, Andirsoone, Andresoun, Andersoune, Andherson, Androson, Andirston, Andresson, Andreson, Andrewson, Andresen, Andrews, MacAndrews, MacAndrew, Endirone Scottish Clan AndersonClan Motto: Stand Sure Clan Badge: Oak Tree Lands: Badenoch In Scotland Anderson and MacAndrew refers to the son of the servant of St. Andrew, on of Scotland's patron Saints. The Gaelic 'Gilleaindreas' - literally a servant of St. Andrew, Scotland's patron saint and thus in Scotland the Gaelic form of Anderson is Mac Ghille Aindrais. The form Anderson was most seen in the Lowlands but in the Highlands it was more common to see MacAndrew(s). The first mention of McAndrew is about 1400 when the name first appeared in the area of Badenoch. However the name did appear in the Ragman Rolls of 1296, when two citizens from Dumfries and Peebles, with the name of Andreu, swore allegiance to Edward I. My Anderson Family: Anderson is my husband's family name and has been traced back to John Anderson born about 1790 in Scotland. He married Margaret Cobban who was christened at Elgin in Moray in the year 1790. They had 10 children. Two of whom migrated to Australia, James Cobban Anderson and Hugh Anderson, both of whom my husband descends from. I am also in search of an Anderson on my side of the family. She's rather a dead end for me. Her name was Aseneth Belle Anderson b. 1824 in Knox Co., Kentucky and she married in abt 1845 to Moses Jasper Hon. Her mother's maiden name may have been Dewitt.
